چکیده

An ecosystem is a prototypical complex system, exhibiting a self-organised temporal dynamics, the characterisation and description of which is riddled with challenges. In this study, simulated ecosystems in the multi-species model WIST (Weather-driven, Individual-based, Spatially explicit, Terrestrial ecosystem model) are used as surrogates with which to explore and characterise the long-term dynamics of ecosystems subject to disturbances of varying scale and frequency. A visual recurrence analysis is used to study the biomass history in each of the simulated systems. The recurrence analysis illustrates clearly the differences between the dynamic regimes of different systems and the subsequent effects of disturbances on these dynamic regimes. Recurrence analysis may prove to be a useful technique for the characterisation of data from ecosystem models and long-term ecological monitoring programs.

Aftermath of Mountain Pine Beetle Outbreak in British Columbia: Stand Dynamics, Management Response and Ecosystem Resilience

The mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins) (MPB) has infested and killed millions of hectares of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia Engelm) forests in British Columbia, Canada, over the past decade. It is now spreading out of its native range into the Canadian boreal forest, with unknown social, economic and ecological consequences. This review explores the ramificati...

Market Based Analysis of Natural Gas and Electricity Export via System Dynamics

By increasing the extraction of natural gas, its role in the restructured power systems is being expanded, due to its lower pollution. Iran has the second largest reserves of natural gas in the world and exports it to different countries. This paper represents long run analysis of natural gas export from Iran to Turkey as a case study, considering direct transfer and exporting via the power mar...

Viewing forests through the lens of complex systems science

Complex systems science provides a transdisciplinary framework to study systems characterized by (1) heterogeneity, (2) hierarchy, (3) self-organization, (4) openness, (5) adaptation, (6) memory, (7) non-linearity, and (8) uncertainty. Complex systems thinking has inspired both theory and applied strategies for improving ecosystem resilience and adaptability, but applications in forest ecology ...
